LJMU Max Perutz Life Science Building Refurbishment and New Build
Client: Liverpool John Moores University
Refurbishment and new build providing state of the art laboratory facilities for almost all cellular and molecular research as well as teaching
space, office space and home office licenced specialist live life science research.
The fully refurbished building fulfilled the following key objectives for the client:
• To provide high tech, high quality, flexible and future proofed accommodation in line with the S-labs initiative and principles.
• To be low maintenance, sustainable in its construction and to reduce the overall Byrom St Campus carbon footprint.
• To be fully accessible to people with disabilities.
• To be fully compliant with statutory legislation.
• To allow for specialist activities to be clustered in one location.
• To provide headroom for growth in programme delivery and research outputs.
The building’s design and construction incorporated many sustainable elements and concepts including a state of the art integrated
services system, an external aluminium over cladding system, low energy electrical components, a substantial reduction in waste by
reusing the existing foundations, structural frame and floors and by working closely with the client’s team to ensure the products specified
integrated fully with the clients’ Carbon Management Plan and fully embrace the S-labs initiative and principles.

We worked closely with our supply chain to ensure the programme was monitored, developed and protected and we addressed site issues and unforeseen
circumstances by promoting viable mutually beneficial solutions to protect the final outcome without compromising the quality of the end product or indeed
