Project Description

Blue Coat School

Hightown were successful in a competitive tender to provide the internal refurbishment of a Grade II listed building, The Blue Coat School, Liverpool. The work consisted of creating additional modern teaching spaces, as well as a new sixth form college common area. Utilising an existing unused kitchen area, a new bistro type eatery and toilet facilities were created for sixth form students and guests.

Works included the strip out of existing services and reinstatement of electrical rewiring, lighting, security, fibre optic, ventilation, and heating works. Façade works included re-pointing, overhauling and replacement of timber and metal windows, with associated external works and drainage. Along with redecoration and modernisation. We also undertook heritage works within the scheme which included repairs to flooring, glazed bricks and woodblock flooring.

We worked closely with the design team and specialist sub-contractors during the pre-construction period to deliver a robust cost plan, commenting on the completeness of design and proposing ideas and solutions based on our knowledge and experience gained through other projects of this nature. Through this process we were able to design out future variations and propose value engineering savings and solutions. This process created a whole team approach and ownership of the drawings, specification and cost plan.

The project was completed on time to the satisfaction of the school and stakeholders, with very few snags and zero defects at handover.

Testimonials

“AG Hill Chartered Building Services Engineers have worked successfully with Hightown Construction on several projects across the University spectrum. Hightown proved that they are very client orientated and non-contractual, open to advice and ideas from outside of their structure with a very flexible and progressive attitude to construction delivery, more akin to the partnering arrangements suggested by Latham as the ideal methodology with which to approach construction, as opposed to the more common adversarial method”.
